Role: Engineering Manager

Salary: £80,000-£100,000 (+ discretionary annual bonus of up to 7.5%)

Location: Hybrid - London 2 days per week

The Opportunity:

Our client, an innovative medical technology business operating within the global life sciences sector, is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join its growing technology team.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team of Engineers while remaining genuinely hands-on technically.

This isn't a traditional Engineering Manager role where you'll step away from the technology. You'll continue designing and building web applications and RESTful APIs alongside the team, while also taking ownership of engineering standards, architecture, technical debt and continuous improvement.

You'll work closely with the hiring manager on system architecture and technical direction, while leading the engineering team through Agile delivery and creating an environment where Engineers can develop, collaborate and perform at their best.

This role would suit someone who genuinely enjoys the balance of people leadership and hands-on engineering, and who wants the opportunity to influence both the technical direction and culture of a growing engineering function.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and line-manage a team of Engineers, providing regular 1:1s, feedback, coaching and career development
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and development of engineering talent
  • Build a collaborative, accountable and high-performing engineering culture
  • Mentor Engineers and support their technical and professional growth

Hands-On Development

  • Remain hands-on with the development of web applications and RESTful APIs
  • Design and build solutions alongside the engineering team
  • Conduct code reviews and maintain high coding standards
  • Lead by example when it comes to engineering best practices and quality

Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Work closely with the VP Business Solutions on system architecture and technical direction
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and help shape the future technology landscape
  • Drive improvements across the codebase, tooling and engineering practices
  • Take ownership of technical debt and ensure it is systematically addressed

Agile Delivery

  • Keep the team aligned to sprint goals and ensure commitments are delivered
  • Remove blockers quickly and support predictable sprint delivery
  • Facilitate and participate in Agile ceremonies
  • Promote transparency, collaboration and continuous improvement across the team

What We're Looking For:

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience leading and line-managing software engineering teams
  • Strong hands-on development experience with C# and .NET
  • Strong experience with JavaScript and modern front-end frameworks, ideally React
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying solutions within Azure
  • Experience with serverless architectures, particularly Azure Functions
  • Working knowledge of microservices and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with Cosmos DB or similar NoSQL databases
  • Strong understanding of Git workflows, including branching, merging and pull requests
  • Proven experience leading Agile teams and delivering consistently against sprint commitments
  • Experience contributing to or owning system architecture decisions
  • Ability to balance people management with hands-on technical responsibilities

Desirable

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, ideally Azure DevOps
  • Knowledge of Azure B2C and identity frameworks
  • Experience with TDD, BDD and test automation
  • Experience working within regulated environments such as medical devices, clinical trials or life sciences
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent experience

If you're an Engineering Manager who wants to remain hands-on while having the opportunity to shape architecture, improve engineering practices and build a high-performing team, we'd love to hear from you.
