Interviews in construction tend to be concrete. Expect to be asked about specific projects and specific decisions rather than hypotheticals.

Commercial

  • Walk me through a valuation you prepared end to end.
  • Describe a compensation event you managed and how it was resolved.
  • How do you approach a subcontractor final account that is in dispute?
  • What is your process for cost reporting to the client?

Delivery

  • Tell me about a programme that slipped and what you did.
  • How do you handle a subcontractor who is behind and blaming design?
  • Describe a safety issue you stopped work over.
  • What does a good site handover look like to you?

Behavioural

  • Where have you disagreed with a project manager, and what happened?
  • How do you keep a client informed when the news is bad?
  • What part of the job do you find hardest?
  • Why this sector, and why now?

The last one matters more than candidates expect, particularly for career changers. A specific answer beats an enthusiastic one.
